Fun Blog Found: Miracle Mile Mind

Hello Sun Shiners!

I just found this ridiculously cool blog, Miracle Mile Mind! I found it because of a pingback on one of my own posts I had written on SuperForest, and was struck in awe by the incredible writing, loving, and inspiration-ing. These cool cats have got it going on! They say it themselves on their about page:

HEY! We are a group of seriously inspired friends who wanted to find a place to share the love. Welcome to Miracle Mile Mind!

Click here for the first mind blowing post I read from their site. It is entitled “Saturday” and has to do with keeping focus on what you love, telling yourself it IS worthwhile, and the silliness of time. It is an incredible piece of written work. Go READ!

You will now find the link to these guys on our own “Places to Visit” column so you can find them through us at any time! Thank you Miracle Mile Mind for the inspiration, keep doing what you do!

Love,

The Essence of Inspiration

I like the beach.

Not because I like the coolness of the water, or the excitement of the surf or getting my tan on. I don’t even like the beach for the company and bonding experiences; no, in fact the truth is quite to the contrary, I like the beach for the seclusion. I like it for its beauty. Most of all however, I like the beach because it inspires me.

Sometimes in the early morning, before the sun even rises, I get out of bed and treck the 20 minute walk to the beach. I’m often disoriented. The street lamps are still on, and I’ll often spy a car or two with headlights blazing.  After stumbling through the darkness, I’ll reach the cool sand, and after a little more walking, my rock, a round elevated piece stone, made smooth by millenia of waves and harsh weather. Usually I’ll find that the beach is entirely empty. I’ll smile to myself and gaze out into the ocean. Sometimes by the time I reach my rock, the faint glow of the approaching dawn already illuminates the water. Slowly, the light will spill out over the horizon, and I’ll see the contours of the water more clearly: the different shades of a rolling swell, the vividness of the froth that bursts forth onto the sand. I’ll proceed to watch the entire sunset, a truly beautiful spectacle of colors and textures, a ritual as old as time itself. This inspires me.

Now I’m the kind of guy that likes to analyze the big picture, to brainstorm about and catagorize what I learn about life, the world, and myself. I find that one of the most basic and meaningful questions we can pose is this:

What should we strive for in our lifetime? Life is really too short, so naturally, we ought to figure out what we want to accomplish in our brief lifespans. There are many answers to this question. Some would say that fame and wealth and being remembered are the ultimate goals, while others dedicate their lives to learning. I for one, and  I know I’m not alone on this, strive to be happy.

So how do we stay happy? I, for example, could make myself happy by doing something I love, by being with someone I care about, and especially by making someone else happy. I have found, however, that one of the few things we need to be happy, is inspiration. What is inspiration? what motivates us to go out and be the best we can be, to take on and accomplish goals, to challenge ourselves to be confident, hardworking and selfless individuals.

So how do we stay inspired? This is the difficult question. I like to go out and find something I think is beautiful, such as a sunrise, among a thousand other things. However we all know it is quite easy to lose sight of what inspires us, to fall into the abyss of anxiety, addiction, idleness, or depression. We are not alone, however, in our quest for inspiration, and if we collaborate our ideas, and express ourselves together, whether on the internet or in person, it is much easier to lead a healthy, inspired, and happy life.

Remember, the sun shines on, and it’s especially pretty from the beach too…

much love,

max

Fun Poster: Why You Should Stop Drinking Bottled Water

I don’t touch bottled water, and haven’t for a long time. I usually refuse to buy it for people to. Extreme? I don’t really think so. It is one of the silliest commodities on the market. And here is a fun poster reminding us why.

If you need more convincing check out The Plastiki website! The Plastiki is a ship made out of recycled plastic bottles, and other recycled materials. It sailed from the San Francisco to Sydney, Australia. The journey’s purpose was to show the world that we can make use of the “trash” we have created, and that we need to stop making it! In the 3168 hours the Plastiki was at sail 7680 million plastic bottles were used in the U.S. alone! That is insane, and there is no reason for it. No make the change now. Get your own water bottle and carry it around. Once you start using it, you’ll enjoy it so much more. Here is Mr. Jason Mraz’s take on the issue, read it up HERE & HERE!

Much love,

Mathew

Thought Bubbles

Dearest Sun Shiners,

I present to you Amy Krouse’s Thought Bubbles. Shared by a good friend of mine on SuperForest. It is a wonderful video filled with hope, joy, kindness, and changing the world. The kind of changing the world Sun Shines On is about, the simple kind. The kind that starts with a smile, a hello, and a thank you & please. The world is ours to make. So, before we start worrying about the oil spill, wars, economy, the Earth, and the rest of those overwhelming things, start with you and your world. We here at Sun Shines On are neoenvironmentalists, a term coined by SuperForest’s Jackson Nash. We first ask what can we change about our immediate environment? “What can I do to change what I see in front of me?” should be the question all of us ask. If I change the world I perceive into a warmer and better place, and so do you, and so does the next guy, then we WILL change the world. We have to make the steps of change for OURSELVES first, the rest will come. If I don’t demand living without oil, how can I wholly blame BP for what happened. It starts with me, then my community (the people I know personally), then my global community (the rest of you rad people I connect with via internet). It is our individual responsibility to change. Because if we don’t how can we expect someone else to do it for us? How can we expect an institution to do it for us? We can’t. Let us set the example, and the lead the way. Now enjoy this very lovely video.

Love,

Mathew

¡Fractals are Amazing!

Fractals are truly one of the most amazing things that occur in nature. In this TED video, Ron Eglash shows how fractals appear in African villages.

Enjoy:

These fractals occur everywhere from Cameroon to Zambia to a head of cauliflower. Eglash’s discoveries are amazing because they reveal another common thread that exists between human societies.  It’s that sort of thing that amazes me, the common threads: language, pyramids, mythology etc. All of these are common threads that tie together cultures and peoples that have been separated by distance. As humans learn more we recognize more of these similarities.

Wikipedia has a pretty comprehensive entry on fractals. I encourage you to read more about them there.
